Social Media and Technology Company Snapchat Inc, which has recently changed name to Snap Inc, has created a rage among Americans by launching its smartglasses Snapchat Spectacles in November 2016. Snap Inc. announced 24 hours before installing the snapbots are different locations across California, New York, Arizona, Oklahoma but still many people were seen looking confused seeing the appearance of mysterious vending machines with Snapchat Spectacles logo and all covered in yellow color. But it turned out that these snapbots are the only means of getting your hands on the Spectacles. The $130 Smartglasses went on to become quite popular among the snapchat users around the nation. Spectacles connects with any Apple or Android smartphone with the help of Bluetooth and allows the user to take a snap or record a 10-second video showing first person view of the user and you can further upload it in your Snapchat app on your phone following the usual procedure.
Along with on-going craze of these fun spectacles, a number of people seemed to be unhappy with the launch because these were not available for the people with prescribtion glasses. But that was until Wednesday as Rochester based lens manufacturer Rochester Optical has announced that they are now cutting and selling prescription lens for the Spectacles. Rochester Optical was the company which sold prescription lens solutions for Google Glass in 2014. Interested people have to go through a order form filling process online and can get the Spectacles with required lens shipped to the given address. Rochester Optical said that they are going to completely replace the existing lens being used in the Spectacles and it won’t be available as an option.
The prices for these lenses start at $99 for normal lens and can go up to $200 for the fancy. Users have to shell out $149 and $200 for polarized and photochromic lens, respectively in addition to $130 price of the Spectacles. The latest Snapbot is found to be installed in Los Angeles on Thursday. Snapchat has claimed that they have sold about 200 Spectacles per Snapbot till now. Inside the box you will find The Spectacles, a USB charging cable, charging case and a ghost-shaped cleaning cloth. Spectacles takes 90 minutes for full battery charge and is capable of capturing 100 10-second videos in one charge.
The residents of Chicago have been demanding the location to be the next for the release of snapbots and they have been consistently tweeting about the snap and some of them also telling the company that they will eventually start using the application if they won’t release the Spectacles in Chicago. According to Illinois Revenue Department, Snap Inc. isn’t allowed to sell the product here.
