However sending of Christmas greeting cards is a relatively radical addition to Christmas tradition. But it has a history of sending and receiving Christmas greeting cards and it all started in the United Kingdom in the 1840s by Sir Henry Cole approximately two centuries ago. Sir Henry had the idea of Christmas cards with one of his friend John Horsley, who was an artist. The first card they designed together and further they sold it for 1 shilling each.(That costs 5 or maybe 8 cents today). The card was having three panels. In the outer panel it was shown that people care for the poor and in the middle panel, it was clearly shown that a family is having a Christmas party having dinner. Even then there were few people who did not like the card at all because they were having a problem with the picture showing a child is having a glass of wine in his hands. Around one thousand cards were printed then and sold. Those cards are very rare today and cost thousands of Pounds or Dollars.
Christmas cards were very extravagant and thoughtful process. The cards become very popular among the Upper class in Britain at that time. However, the development and the up gradation of the postal system is making sending cards easier and more affordable which is in return is becoming the big reason for the popularity of Christmas cards. Initially, the Christmas greeting cards were not only bound to the religious pictures there were pictures of birds, animals, flowers, fruits, candles and nature beauty on the cover page of the card.
