Distressed Atmosphere In Tamil Nadu As Jayalalithaa Passed Away


A mournful day is spread across the state of Tamil Nadu as it’s one of the most powerful politicians and six-time Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaraman passed away at the age of 68. She died last night at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. She was admitted to Apollo Hospital on September 23 for a fever but later she was diagnosed with infection and acute dehydration. She was ailing for 73 days and had been in the hospital fighting with life. She was readmitted on Sunday after she suffered a Cardiac Arrest. The news of Cardiac Arrest and her being readmitted came few hours after DMK ministers told that she has been getting better.

There was a sense of intense and anguish atmosphere across the state when everyone heard about her health conditions on Monday. Around 2000 cops were deployed across the city and a senior police officer has been given the duty to observe and control any unwanted situation at the borders. The official announcement of her death was given around midnight by the Apollo Hospital Doctors who were treating her. A large number of people were gathered outside the hospital while the news of her death came out and whole nation especially Tamil Nadu is in deep grieve. The State has declared a three-day mourning, schools and colleges will remain closed. State Govt. has declared 6th December a state holiday as a mark of respect towards her.


Wrapped in tricolor cloth, Jayalalithaa’s body is kept at Rajaji Hall where people can pay their last respects to her. Cremation has been scheduled for 4:30 pm today at the iconic Marina Beach, which is also the memorial place for her mentor and former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran. Famously known as MGR,Marudhar Gopalan Ramachandran introduced Jayalalithaa into politics. Both were famous actors in Tamil film industry and have worked opposite to each other dozens of time. Jayalalithaa was very famous among her fans as an actress and was also record holder with only Tamil actress with most silver jubilee hits in her career- 80 out of 85 films Tamil movies and also has 28 hit movies in Telugu. She had a very successful film career and also got the opportunity to work in a Hindi movie ‘Izzat’ starring her and Bollywood superstar Dharmendra.

A rain of tweets started pouring in the night after the news of her demise was disseminated across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also quick to react to the news and expressed his condolences through tweets. He said that “I will always cherish the innumerable occasions when i had the opportunity to interact with Jayalalithaa Ji, Her connect with citizens, concern for the welfare of the poor, the women and marginalized will always be a source of inspiration, May her soul rest in peace.” He will visit Chennai today to pay his tributes to her with a wreath.

Jayalalithaa, popularly known as ‘Amma’ by her huge fan following, was always respected for her nature for looking after poor and helping them fulfilling the needs. She was a self-taught woman and was very strong. she started working in movies at the age of 15 to help her family financially. She had successfully made the brand ‘Amma’ under which she introduced the welfare for the poor. Her brand includes Amma canteens, Amma Pharmacies, Amma Drinking Water, Amma Cement, Amma vegetables. Her brand has been very famous among the people of Tamil Nadu.

A glimpse of her firm administrative skills was seen in Tamil Nadu as post-Tsunami relief and rehabilitation efforts. She deployed her best officers to take control of the disastrous situation. Even foreign ministers like Hillary Clinton appreciated the relief efforts.

All her allies and rivals was regarded her as one of the most powerful politicians in the country, she was one of those leaders who wasn’t swept away by the ‘Modi Wave’ and AIADMK won 37 out of state’s 39 Lok Sabha seats in 2014. Jayalalithaa has been dominating the Tamil Nadu politics for around three decades and she was elected as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the sixth term in May. After almost few hours of her demise, Finance Minister of State O.Paneerselvam took the seat of CM who was already given few portfolios in October.

Jayalalithaa will be given a state funeral with flags being flown at half mast and one-day mourning. Her casket was placed on the steps of Rajaji Hall and four armymen covered her in tricolor. Her confidante Shashikala was near the casket. The third largest party in India, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kashagam(AIADMK), tweeted “Our beloved Leader, The Iron Lady of India. . . . is no more.”
