The nation is remembering Dr. Vikram Sarabhai on his death anniversary toady i.e. 30 December. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai is known to a father of Indian Space Program. he was a great institution builder and he also has established a large number of institutions and even helped in many institution’s establishments in miscellaneous fields. After returning from Cambridge University to an independent India in 1947 he played an important role in establishing the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, later he persuades charitable trusts controlled by his family and friends to empower a research center near his home in Ahmedabad. He founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad on November 11, 1947. He was only 28 at that point of time. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai was a creator and rancher of institutions and PRL was the first step towards that direction. He served Physical Research Laboratory from 1966-1971.

He was the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. Along with another Ahmedabad-based industrialist, Vikram Sarabhai has also played an important role in the creation of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad Gujarat. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai who gave tremendous contribution in the field of space research and placed India in the world in the field of space research. He was the co-founder of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The ISRO’s lead facility for launch vehicle development, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center is named in his memory which is locate din Thiruvananthapuram Kerala.

In 1942, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai married Mrinalini Sarabhai, a celebratory classical dancer. His daughter Mallika Sarabhai is a renowned danseuse and activist and his son Kartikeya Sarabhai is famous educationist environmentalist. Dr. Vikrama Sarabhai set up the first rocket launching station in India with the help of Dr. Homi Bhabha, who was regarded as the father of India’s Nuclear Science Program. This center was located at Thumba near Thiruvananthapuram on the coast of the Arabian Sea, mainly because of its proximity to the equator. The first rocket was launched on November 21, 1963, with Sodium Vapour payload.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai started a project for the launch of an Indian Satellite, and its resultant in the first Indian Satellite Aryabhata was put into orbit in 1975 from a Russian Cosmodrome. He also implanted the Textile Industrial Research Association (ATIRA) which further helped in booming up the textile business in Ahmedabad and in the Center for environment Planning and  Technology (CEPT).

In the year 1966 and in the year 1972 he was awarded the prestigious award Shri Padma Bhushan and Padam Vibhushan (Posthumous) respectively. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai passed away in the year 1971 at Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
