We are just a month away from the highly speculated Punjab Elections 2017, for which the whole state has been waiting eagerly. Today the Election Commission has released the dates for the elections of several states having elections this year. According to that, Punjab elections will take place on February 4 and vote count will be done on March 11. The EC has also directed parties with some new rules for the election process including opening bank accounts to pay for campaign expenses, and the limit for amount to be spent on campaign cannot exceed 28 lakhs.
Punjab will soon become a battlefield for the parties as the competition is going to be tough for this year’s election. Akali Dal party is going to complete their 10 years as it created history in Punjab by winning the two terms in a row for the first time in 2011. The impact of CM Parkash Singh Badal and his son Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, can be felt very much along the rural areas of the state.
But the picture is little different on the urban side as many people have stood against them accusing them of bringing drugs into the state and defuncting the youth of Punjab. In a recent study, it was claimed that around 72% of Punjab’s youth has drooled into drugs. There were accusations on Cabinet Minister Bikram Singh Majithia for using his businesses to smuggle drugs into the state from the border, but nothing has been proved as of now.
One of the key figures for the 2017 elections, Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu was in the headlines every time there was a talk of Punjab elections turned up. He has been expected to be one of the key candidates in this year’s state election. Ex-BJP leader who left the party in 2016 and then there were rumors about him making his own party but that didn’t turn out well we guess. Today his wife, Dr.Navjot Kaur Sidhu who has recently joined Congress party, told media that he will ‘tentatively’ contest the elections from the Amritsar-east soon after he will join the same party as well. Both of them left BJP in 2016.
She also mentioned that as soon as Sidhu will get the ticket he will reach Amritsar and will work on the campaigning. For the AAP and Congress, there is a lot more than just winning the election. This year’s Punjab election are going to be an attention seeking elections.
